Meet the GlamCandy Photography Team
Photography has always been at the heart of GlamCandy, capturing the skill and expertise demonstrated by our tutors and students. Students have the opportunity to work alongside our photography team for professional quality imaging to expand their portfolios and experience of planning and leading their own photoshoots.
JODIE MANN
BACKGROUND
Jodie Mann is an internationally published creative photographer from the Highlands. Based in Edinburgh, she specialises in commercial, fine art, fashion and beauty photography and is an integral part of GlamCandy’s photography team.
Jodie, who is entirely self-taught, has over 6 years experience in the industry. Makeup artistry and beauty were primarily the main focus of her work, however the need to create a varied portfolio became apparent. It was then that Jodie’s interest in other aspects of photography began to flourish.
In 2011, Jodie left school, bypassed University, and plunged herself straight into the commercial industry in the Highlands. By using her exquisite surroundings to her advantage, she was able to build an impressive and extensive portfolio.
Jodie’s journey into fine art photography began in 2012, when she and her sister Jocasta – a digital illustrator – produced and showcased their first exhibition. The collection, titled ‘Cold Light’, featured photo-digital pieces inspired by the characteristics and folklore of the Highlands – expressed through the human form.
As well as a number of the pieces being displayed by Edinburgh’s Arusha Gallery, reputable fashion and portrait photographer Rankin, described the exhibition as ‘raw talent’. In 2015, leading UK art publisher Washington Green, selected Jodie’s work from over 400 artists to be exhibited at their Castle Fine Art gallery.
Getting back to her industry roots, Jodie went on to join GlamCandy as an in-house photographer. Ever since, she has been capturing the raw talent and passion of our makeup artists through her expertise and dedication to the art.
Jodie said, “Every day with GlamCandy is completely different and presents itself with new challenges.
“Some days I am observing and assisting a young student’s development, watching them flourish in the industry, whilst other days I am shooting campaigns for global brands such as Neäl and Wolf.
“I feel incredibly lucky that I have been given complete artistic freedom with the images I shoot, and as a photographer working with a rapidly expanding company, this is a dream come true.”
ROD PENN
Rod Penn is an esteemed self-taught portrait, fashion and beauty photographer based in Scotland and is one of the most experienced on the GlamCandy’s photography team.
On his journey to becoming a full-time photographer, Rod worked as a martial arts and language teacher, spending much of his twenties and early thirties living and traveling throughout Asia and South America.
His photography career began in the days of film, developing and printing images in the dark room. His career as a commercial photographer began in 2007, working as an events photographer with clients such as Glastonbury Music Festival.
From event photography, Rod discovered his love for portraiture and began to self-study studio photography.
The great fashion and portrait photographers of the past such as Irving Penn and Helmut Newton, along with more contemporary photographers such as Annie Leibovitz and Tim Walker, are who Rod takes his inspiration from in his work.
Rod said, “I have a strong interest in performance and dance, and I enjoy creating a sense of drama, elegance, imagination, and movement in my images – taking reference from these roots.”
Rod was a category winner in the 2017 Retina International Photography Awards and is a finalist in the 2018 Scottish Portrait awards. Rod’s art has also been published in the Guardian and the Independent.
Rod said, “GlamCandy is such a great team to work with, it’s an exciting and dynamic role to be one of the official photographers.
“It’s brilliant to work alongside the tutors and students, capturing the many different looks and themes of GlamCandy’s courses.
“I’m most excited about the fashion editorial photoshoots, so we can really get creative and make some wonderful images.”
The images produced by our in-house photographers vividly demonstrate their wealth of experience and artistic abilities.
Jodie and Rod have also created their own dynamic joint company, PennMann, offering a range of services from commercial photography to teaching.
