HISTORY

Since 1992, the St Andrews Charity Fashion Show (FS) continues to initiate and expand on current issues within society through their events and original art. Since its inception, FS has grown in size, reach and grandeur in order to fundamentally affect change throughout the community. The St Andrews Charity Fashion show began as a creative outlet for St Andrews students to voice their beliefs through the medium of fashion. Currently in its twenty-seventh year, FS has established its own brand in the fashion world, and is proud to be the largest and most successful student-run show in the UK. With such growth comes a larger influence both near and far to St Andrews, allowing the organisation to help both key British charities along ambitious and young and British designers alike.

FS facilitates a collaboration between fashion, charity, and history upon which emerging designers gain recognition, established brands become staples amongst students and real change is brought to those in need.

CHARITY PARTNERS

Each year the FS organisation partners with an ambitious charity, dedicated to improving the lives of those less fortunate. This year FS chose Social Bite as their 2019 charitable partner. For FS2019 they were keen to build a strong relationship with a charitable organisation that embodies their ethos of togetherness and community support, two phrases which embodies the life-changing work of Social Bite.

THE EVENT

FS2019 was held on Saturday the 16th of February on the St Andrews University premises. Our lead tutor and make-up artist Amanda McCarthy @amandamccarthy__, was the lead artist for the event, whilst Sasha Bell was our core organiser for the make-up.

Our students Mhari Law @mharilawmakeupartistry_, Anna Cuthbert @annareillymakeup, Emma Stewart @emmastewart_makeup, Silvia Dobroviceanu @silviabeautyglam, and Lauren Alexander were all chosen for the event due to being high achieving students in their class.

The event started at 8 pm but the preparation for the make-up began at 2 pm to ensure all 21 models were completed on time. The students were given a two-hour time scale to complete all of the models looks, which for some was the first insight into a professional environment and working to a very limited time.

EVENTS COORDINATOR

Sasha Bell states “The whole GlamCandy artistry team worked in coherence which made the time scale given run seamlessly. The girls are trained by tutors with years of experience so were extremely professional with the client, model and fellow students”

The brief given for the look was a metallic graphic liner and were told to adapt the look to enhance the models natural features.

LEAD ARTIST

Initially, lead artist Amanda McCarthy gave the students a demonstration of the desired look. Amanda carefully demonstrated how to create dewy skin whilst also creating a full coverage look. Amanda also showed the students how to use her Kryolan airbrush.

Each look produced by the students and Amanda were to perfection matched the brief given. The metallic liner was echoed through each look with slight variations.

The clients feedback from the make-up looks created were extremely positive and complimented the hair styles and clothes paired with the make-up look.

BACKSTAGE

During the event, lead artist Amanda McCarthy was backstage completing final touch-ups of the make-up. Making sure the liner was still in tact whilst also keeping the skin dewy.

Amanda states “The atmosphere backstage was incredible. Everyone is so engrossed in perfecting each aspect about the look from the hair to the clothes and it was a pleasure to be involved. From completing previous fashion shows with St Andrews university, I was able to pass on insider tips I had accumulated to the students which also helped with their confidence”

Overall, the St Andrews FS Fashion Show was a complete success. It was an invaluable experience for the students involved, giving them an insight into the professional aspects of make-up. Not only learning vital skills but using these skills to create a prosperous career.
