1.SQA ACCREDITED MAKEUP COURSE
Suitable for beginners, students continuing on from their HNC and people looking to advance their makeup skills.
Higher National Qualifications provide practical skills and theoretical knowledge that meet the needs of employers. The HNC/D in Make-up Artistry: TV, Film and Theatre (SCQF level 7/8) develops knowledge and skills in all aspects of make-up artistry and should enable learners to work confidently and competently within this industry.
These qualifications covers areas such as: period and 20th century hairstyling and make-up; ageing skills; character skills; specialised make-up effects; life casting and mould making; and sculpting and flat mould production for prosthetic make-up.
COURSE CONTENT
20th CENTURY HAIR & MAKEUP
Develop the skills required to research, plan and perform 20th century hairstyling and makeup looks for working within the TV, film and theatre industry.
AGEING SKILLS
Gain knowledge of media ageing within TV, film and theatre. Develop creativity and imagination within makeup designs to show ageing through the decades.
RISK MANAGEMENT, PRODUCT SAFETY
Identify key aspects of risk management, appropriate product safety procedures, practices and research the sustainability of products whilst considering ethical practice and environmental impacts.
PRODUCTION STUDIES FOR THEATRE
Research a variety of roles, mark up scripts and produce hair and makeup looks from a given design brief for a theatre production.
PRODUCTION STUDIES FOR TV & FILM
The unit will include marking up a script/brief, planning timescales and understand continuity hair, makeup and facial hair for actors on camera.
CHARACTER SKILLS
Develop skills of character make-up for use in TV, Film and Theatre. Design and create a variety of character makeups including make-up for TV, Film and Theatre, Sinister, Drag, Dirty Down and Non-human incorporating character enhancements such as added hair, hand-laid hair, bald caps, costumes and props.
MAKEUP HAIRSTYLING & COSTUME
Research, plan, design and perform a total look incorporating makeup, hairstyling and costume incorporating a headdress on a model.
POSTICHE FOR TV, FILM & THEATRE
Investigate the use of a variety of postiche (hair pieces and wigs) and prepare, fitting and maintenance of postiche appropriate to the makeup artist working within the TV, film and theatre industry.
PERIOD MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING
Develop 18th and 19th Century period hairstyling and makeup skills to meet the requirements of the theatrical and visual media makeup industry.
BRIDAL SPECIAL MAKEUP EFFECTS FOR TV & FILM
Develop specialised makeup effects used within the film/television theatre. Create specialised makeup effects for a variety of scenarios from serious injury and disfigurement to death.
SCULPTING & FLAT MOULDING PRODUCTION FOR PROSTHETIC MAKEUP
Gain skills in sculpting and flat mould production for prosthetics makeup application to plan, design and produce makeup looks using self-made prosthetics.
LIFE CASTING & MOULDING MAKING
Produce a lifecast and multi-piece prosthetics appliances for character make-up application. Research plan and produce a facial lifecast and design and produce a range of moulds. Produce prosthetics appliances to create character make-up looks suitable for use within the TV and film industry.
Photography Introduction
Explore modern and historical photographic equipment and techniques. Produce and present original images, demonstrating how photographic techniques can represent a story and influence appearance.
ORGANISE A PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITY
Understand the importance of target audience, promotion, marketing and planning to promote & advertise your work, skills and services.
WORK PLACEMENT
Develop essential workplace skills and experience to enhance career development opportunities. Explore existing or new employment prospects and where possible to support progression into paid employment.
DIGITAL MARKETING COMMS: WEBSITES
Develop digital skills to progress in Marketing, Advertising and/or PR role & understand user managed website development.

Yes, professional photoshoots are included in your course. After you have completed your course there are many other opportunities to get involved in photoshoots and work experience as a graduate.

Many students self-fund from personal money, savings, finance, or pay their fees using monthly income or apply to SAAS (Students Award Agency Scotland) & SLC (Student Loans Company) to cover the cost.

1. Enrol in our HNC Fashion Makeup Course or HND Makeup Artistry Course.
2. Be a resident in Scotland on the first day of the course.
