“My career for 22 years has been in social care, I work nightshift as a social care worker in a care home for adults with learning disabilities.
Current legislation and restrictions due to Covid-19 have limited opportunities for newly qualified makeup artists at the moment. I am working on starting up my own business as a freelance makeup artist and bridal makeup artist. I hope that as I gain experience and grow my Clientele, I can transition to making makeup my full-time career. I am currently attending Glam Candy bridal pro course and practicing make up on others as much as I can.”
How was your experience studying with GlamCandy through lockdown?
“I had a really positive experience of studying my HNC with GlamCandy during lockdown. Our daily lessons were over zoom, our class and Tutor Paulina had so much fun! The lockdown was really hard for everyone, as a key worker I was working during lockdown but having my HNC classes 3 days a week and course work to complete gave me something to enjoy and focus my time on which was actually really helpful.
There were more positives than negatives and I would describe it as bittersweet. I was frustrated at times that I was learning makeup and couldn’t get the full GlamCandy experience attending the college or have the opportunity to practice make up on others but looking back doing my HNC during this time kept me busy and was a perfect time to study at home!
Glam Candy always looked after us and have given the lockdown students an after care support package to help us gain more practical experience that we missed due to lockdown. I am really grateful for this.”
A makeup product you cannot live without?
A makeup product I cannot live without is Primer! I have combination skin, so prep is everything in keeping the shiny T zone area under control. I love Illamasqua matte veil.
Who is your biggest makeup inspiration?
My biggest make up inspiration is Rebecca Capel. I started watching her You Tube tutorials and she is very talented, a relatable down to earth girl. I follow her on Instagram too and have done lots of her online masterclasses. I have learned so much from her from makeup techniques to growing as an MUA in the business. Check her out ‘@rebeccacapelmakeup’.
Your best makeup hack?
My best makeup hack has got to be setting black gel liner with a black eyeshadow. This works amazing in the waterline especially if you are prone to watery eyes. That liner won’t budge!
What has been your favourite makeup trend of 2020?
My favourite makeup trend of 2020 is the fluffy brow using pink honey brow soap. So quick and easy, loving the full brow.
What’s your favourite beauty Instagram account and why?
My favourite beauty Instagram account is Beauty bay. There are always short tutorials of artists creating looks with their products which gives you inspiration. Also, it’s a great platform to see new products and offers. As an MUA you buy new products for your kit all the time and beauty bay are such a fab site/Instagram account to see trends and offers.
Most used app on your phone?
Most used app on my phone is definitely Instagram. I could watch make up tutorials all day.
If you could go back and give your teenage self advice what would it be?
Advice to my teenage self – Listen to your mum more and you don’t always know better! Also, to not worry about what other people think of you. Be self-assured, have confidence and create your own style. One day you will look back and realise you wasted too much time worrying about small stuff that doesn’t matter.
What would you say to anybody thinking about studying with GlamCandy?
Advice to anyone thinking about studying at GlamCandy. DO IT!! Studying with Glam Candy has changed my life. I dreamed about becoming a makeup artist most of my life, but my career took another path. At 37 years old I am so glad I took a leap of faith, believed in myself and committed to the course which will allow my dream to come true by gaining the qualification for my dream job.
Yes, you have to work hard and push yourself out of your comfort zone at times, but it is so worth it. The more you put into it the more you get out of it and the tutors are a constant fountain of knowledge. I have met an amazing bunch of people at GlamCandy and thoroughly enjoyed my experience studying HNC.
