Laura Demir HNC Student

Laura is an HNC Fashion Makeup student studying at GlamCandy Edinburgh. We caught up with her to discuss her experience on the course, her future career plans, and her top tip for applying makeup! Based in Linlithgow, Laura was a stay-at-home mum of 2 children before considering a change of career. With a keen interest in both fashion and makeup, she decided to combine both passions and pursue a career in fashion makeup artistry. After conducting research, she decided that GlamCandy’s HNC in Fashion Makeup would be perfect. The location and structure of the course meant that she could easily fit studying around her family responsibilities. Initially, Laura began the HNC course last year before the pandemic threatened to halt her progress. She says, “Thank god for Zoom, this allowed us to still carry on with the course!”. Teaching methods were adapted, and she was able to complete her studies virtually. The risk of embarking on something completely new has definitely paid off. She says, “I absolutely loved the course and didn’t want it to end. I didn’t even have a clue about makeup when I first started. I didn’t know what each brush was for. I used to take around 2 minutes to apply my makeup but not so much now!” Her personal highlight is being taught by a mix of different tutors as they all have their own tips and techniques which they can pass on to students. As the industry re-opens, GlamCandy have now offered affected students the opportunity to return to the HNC course in person or take on a short Pro course. This allows students to gain more practical skills in an in-person environment, something that was missing during the lockdown period. Laura has taken up this opportunity to brush up on any gaps in her knowledge. When asked if there were any aspects of the course that she didn’t enjoy (aside from the disruption of Covid), she cites the theory-based coursework, much preferring the hands-on, creative side of things. She didn’t let this deter her, however, stating, “The course is only for 6 months and so worth it”. Lastly, we couldn’t let Laura leave without sharing her top tip for makeup artists! She lets us in on her secret – “After applying lashes, ask your client to look downwards and press the lashes in place using an angled brush”. This ensures that the lashes are applied evenly and will stay put for longer. Looking to the future, Laura considers whether taking on the HNC course has been of value in developing her career. She muses that her career has definitely changed since deciding to study the HNC – she is now a working makeup artist who is salon based. The course has given her the opportunity to develop her confidence, skills and help attract a client base: “I’m now busy most weekends. I also have a few weddings in the next few months which I’m absolutely buzzing about. Who knows what the future holds!” Laura is currently available for bookings and is based at The Vennel Star Barber in Linlithgow.
