Health and Wellbeing
In the new year at GlamCandy, we reflect on student health and wellbeing in 2018.
GlamCandy has always focused on student health and wellbeing by shining a light on the importance of healthy eating, healthy lifestyles and more importantly, a healthy mind.
Each week, GlamCandy offer a supply of fresh fruit for all students, we are devoted to emphasising the importance of healthy eating and its positive effects on your studies and your personal life.
To highlight this further, GlamCandy have supplied health charts placed in the communal areas of each college location. This is aimed at assisting students to identify any general health issues they may have, and how to resolve them.
Feedback from students regarding our health charts has been overwhelmingly positive, noting that they have been more understanding and aware of their lifestyle. They have been encouraged to make a conscious effort to improve their health where applicable.
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
We also focus greatly on student mental health through highlighting the positive benefits of sharing your problems with friends, family and tutors. Whether the issue arises from coursework or personal issues, someone is always there to listen for support and guidance.
To highlight this further and help our students find their ‘zen’, we took our students to Calm, a yoga and wellbeing sanctuary nestled in Edinburgh’s West End. Calm states that they are, “a special place in which you can escape the fast-paced world and find tranquillity.”
The class was held by Lynette Gray, a meditation guide and life coach who carries out her practice at Calm.
Lynette said, “Meditation is not just about feeling good, meditation is about being with yourself and accepting yourself fully no matter what is going on.
“It’s about being with your emotions and allowing yourself to feel them and letting them go. Meditation is about showing yourself compassion and empathy.”
With the growing challenges surrounding the beauty industry’s competitiveness and the ideals we are being forced to fit into, it’s more important than ever to show our support for our students health and wellbeing.
The meditation class aimed to show students the importance of taking care of your mental health, making healthy lifestyle changes and how to start the journey to a more positive outlook on life.
Lynette said, “I am so passionate about sharing the benefits of meditation with the world, I believe it is my purpose and I was honoured this month to be invited to work with GlamCandy.
“Meditation will improve staff mental well-being, reduce stress and create a healthier workplace by boosting your immune system. GlamCandy showing their care for their students and employees is such a positive and powerful move in the make-up industry.”
Student feedback was extraordinary, stating that the class helped them become more self-aware, and appreciated the fact GlamCandy supported their mental health so much.
We are also showing our support for our staff members health by sending them on mindfulness courses. The courses last 8 weeks and help our staff adopt a healthier mind, enhancing every aspect of their physical, mental and emotional well-being.
The aim of the course is to encourage participants to develop a mindfulness practice that can be applied in both their personal and professional lives.
Studies have proven that regularly practicing mindfulness can rewire the brain. Reducing stress through enhancement of the brains concentration, memory, empathy and understanding, ultimately lead to improved impulse control and strengthened relationships.
We believe sharing the importance of a healthy mindset and lifestyle whilst working in the beauty industry with our students, staff and clients is crucial. Positive awareness about these issues so they are spoken about more openly is a pivotal step in encouraging change.
