Whilst we anxiously await the reopening of the makeup industry, we’ve been taking a look at the best beauty shows to get your fix. If you are considering a career in makeup, these shows are perfect in providing an insight into working in the industry.

Alternatively, you may just be a keen beauty enthusiast who wants to learn more about makeup (and there is always something new to learn). It’s possible to start your new career right now – from the comfort of your living room!

GLOW UP: Britains Next Make-Up Star

In this competition-style show, aspiring makeup artists compete in weekly challenges to gain the title of Britain’s Next Makeup Star. The popular beauty show is hosted by L’Oréal Paris’ global make-up director Val Garland and global senior artist for MAC Cosmetics Dominic Skinner, with incredible guest judges featuring each week.

Glow Up takes contestants on various sets, exploring different styles of makeup and techniques. For example, one week they may be asked to do special effects (SFX) on the set of Holby City and doing makeup for theatre productions such as The Lion King the next. This is a fantastic insight into different styles of makeup and provides tips on a range of techniques to try at home. Prepare to feel inspired!

MAKE-UP: A GLAMOROUS HISTORY

In this 3-part documentary series, professional MUA Lisa Eldridge researches the fascinating history of British makeup. Investigating beauty standards of the past, inventive ingredients and techniques and what is still used in modern day cosmetics.

This is a must-watch for anyone interested in how beauty trends have evolved over time.

BROKEN – EPISODE 1 (MAKE-UP MAYHEM)

US-based brand ColourPop Cosmetics and YouTube beauty influencer Marlena Stell both feature in episode 1 of this documentary series. The episode delves into topics such as the rise of the beauty industry, counterfeit cosmetics, makeup production and cosmetic chemistry.

Although the focus is on China as a source of counterfeit products, it is important to remember that these products can be produced and sold anywhere in the world. This show is a great reminder to us as consumers to stay mindful, educated and curious about the background of the products we are purchasing.

Although this iconic series is not a beauty or makeup show per se, many of todays most popular techniques are inspired by the world of drag. Cut crease eyeshadow, contour and highlight techniques have long been used by drag queens to create the illusion of different facial features.

This eccentric competition show is a great watch for anyone who is interested in drag and transformational makeup. Some specific contestants are worth looking out for, such as Raven (Season 2), Raja (Season 3) and Gottmik (Season 13) – who are all from professional makeup artistry backgrounds.

US series’ are streamed on Netflix and UK/Canadian/Down Under series’ are streamed on BBC iPlayer.

All of these makeup shows have us feeling super creative! Will it be recreating a clumpy lash or maybe ombre lips from Glow Up or even Victorian chic? The possibilities are endless!
